HIDs with non projector lamps

HIDs with non projector lamps
Hi guys just a quick one. Have a B5 with normal headlights but are thinking of getting a hid kit. Do I need a set of projector lamps or can I get away with the normal headlights? I hear there's some issues come mot time?!
