ESP Light coming on after a few miles of driving

Just picked up Griffos TDi 4Motion last night and on the way home the ESP light came up on the dash after about 10miles of driving. I turned the engine off and back on again and it turned off, the ESP button activated and de-activated fine for the next 40miles or so.
On the way to work this morning, it came on again after about 10miles of driving - and pressing the ESP switch does nothing.
Any ideas what could be going on here? Have done a quick search and am getting worrying reports of replacement parts in the £1000's
I think a friend of mine has a VAG diagnostic tool so will hook it up to that, but eager to hear if it's something silly or not... anyone?
