B5.5 opening problems via the remote....

PLEASE HELP. My Passat B5.5 Estate is having problems opening via the remote. The key can open the car and the remote has no problems locking the car - just this really annoying problem not opening by using the remote? Can't seein it being the battery in the remote if it locks ok???
