Is the flywheel on the way out?

Post by dick dasterdley »

Hey guys, I've got a mystery noise on my Passat and I'm a bit worried it might be the DMF, although I can't be sure....

It's a 1997 AFN tdi 5 speed...

When it's turning over on the starter, there is a wierd clicking noise from the starter area, which stops as soon as the engine fires up...
There is no chattering or rumbling at idle...

It is fine up to about 65 mph (sounds like it should, plenty of power, smooth gear changes, no clutch judder...)

However after 65ish it develops a roughness and a slight rumbling noise and becomes less pleasant to drive...the rumble and roughness go away when the clutch pedal is pressed and returns when I let the clutch out...

I've got it into my head the it's the DMF, does anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers!
