5.5 wagon tailgate won't close ?????:(

I have a 2002 estate car that the boot won't stay closed


I tried unplugging the loom inside the tailgate etc and the only way to keep it closed has been to release the cable from its fixed location

So now to open the boot I need to climb in and pull the cable at the bottom

Any ideas what's wrong folks ?
