fuel filter

Hi guys, few days ago i noticed a wet patch underneath the car below the engine also the the lower engine cover was soaked & i could smell diesel so i started the car to see whether i can locate the problem after starting the car i could see drops of fuel leaking near the fuel filter, so after closer inspection of the fuel filter i noticed that the drain plug had broken off from the bottom of filter & thats where the fuel was leaking from so has this happened to anyone else ??? also how do you remove the top part where the hoses connect from old filter ??? thanks
