17" or 18" - lower or not lower?

I have been thinking about wheels for my sport wagen for ages after Fitting one side with my mates 18" rocco wheels.
Must admit they looked pretty cool and suited the B5.5 well. would need spacers to get the correct offset.
I'm a bit nervous as I know VW removed sport suspension if the car was spec'd with 17" wheels.
So 18" on sport springs?
I know loads of you chaps have 18" on lowered cars.
Gaz seems happy with his eibech/17" setup, were VW being a bit over cautious?
Yogi5's B12 thread has got me thinking again.
So whats the general consensus, are 18" wheels realy dooable with 100% no clearance issues, even on a standard setup.
