gear lever and 5 gear

hi in the past week I have lost 5 th gear, it feels as if something is amis where the gear lever is as though something is stopping the lever moving across to select 5th gear I wont be able to check till the week end has anyone had this before its a 1.9 5 speed b 5.5 estate I was considering a short shift kit if this will fit replace whatever is jammed
