it shouldnt be this difficult - its just OIL

I'm finding it really difficult to find concise oil advice.
Whats the best engine oil for a 2005 B5.5 2.0l Petrol 130bhp engine with 90k miles please that doesn't cost the earth?
VW garage said 10 /40. Local garage said 5/30.
Owners guide says a load of coded rubbish.
Internet's full of mince.
Car drinks the darn stuff ( as posted previous ) and doesnt have anything otherwise wrong with it.
But i'd really like to have some wise words from you good folk in the know as it looks like i've gone from the frying pan ( FIAT) into the fire. Because of the ridiculous usage I cant afford putting 0/40 or whatever at 50quid a bottle into it.
