Sport 6 speed gearbox whine

Hi All
My sport estate is due an MOT in a couple of months. It could do with new control arms and a wheel bearing. I'm trying to decide whether or not to go ahead and order the parts or move it on as spares or repair now that the box is getting a bit louder.
I know from bitter experience that the cheap arm kits are made of chocolate so I would be shelling out for a premium quality set. I just don't want to throw a few hundred quid at it only to have the box give up soon afterwards. I've found that second hand six speed boxes are rare and pricey and could turn out to be no better than my box.
Any thoughts/advice appreciated
