Help with front spring fitment please

I recently bought Bilstein B4 shock absorbers x4 for my 2002 B5.5 estate.

I just wanted a good quality set.

I enquired if they fit with standard springs as I didn't want to lower my car.

So yesterday I had a go at compressing my new shiny KYB springs with my shiny new Hilka heavy duty spring compressors.

Needless to say it didn't go well or I wouldn't be posting today.

I just cant seem to compress the spring enough. Basically I can get the top of the piston just nearly level with the surface of the top spring seat. But to get the rubber mount on and be able to get the nut tightened down Would need centimetres more. As it is the two faces of the spring compressors are about 4cm away from meeting at which point I cant physically tighten them any more. There is a further issue with the body of the spring compressor riding over / touching the edge of the spring as well making it harder

So can B4'S be used with standard springs?
