B5.5 Passat front wheel drive to 4 motion.

Hi there,
Just bought my 130hp Passat TDI estate. And currently bringing it up to scratch as it was as close as you can get to a barn find with out there being a barn involved...
Only 137k miles though and bar a few door related issues it's beautiful.
I like a challenge and I fancy sticking a 6 speed 4 motion gearbox along with transmission system, primarily before further modifications.
The parts seem fairly easy to get hold of. And I have or will have access to the equipment to do the work within the fullness of time.
I'm aware this would be a huge undertaking of course and it would take a while but I already love the car and I'm just testing the waters to see if this is a thing that has been done before? I imagine there has been some attempt at least to do so.
What has been there experience?
Is there any key limitations to such an endeavour?
Or does this just ring 'idiot' bells, and I should have never even thought about it...
