are diesel engines THAT good?

Doesn't anybody buy petrol powered passats any more? I ask because i am thinking of replacing my present '53 plate petrol 2 litre 20v later in the year. A quick online search for nearly new petrol version passats revealed only about 8 in the entire UK - the nearest to me being 140 miles away! I can understand the majority being ex-company cars would more likely be diesel, but surely private buyers would favour the 1.8T petrol engines, being considerably quicker than 2 litre diesels. I notice all the folk in this forum have gone for a new diesel B7, but having never owned a diesel car, I am little hesitant.
