Rear Bumper Protectors

Has anyone any experience with the various lists of rear bumper protectors on ebay?
Seems a lot to choose from, clear film, vinyl, abs plastic and metal. The Passat estate will be used for transporting the occasional upvc window, glass and tools from time to time and the abs of metal versions would probably be harder wearing. What is the fit like and how do they adhere?
