Fan Running & Car Smells Hot

As above, I’ve noticed today after 2 short journeys that the fans are running my Passat 2.0 tdi for a long time after turning the ignition off.
The car smells hot and the exhaust is ticking too.
My basic diesel knowledge tells me the car is trying to do a DPF regen but this being my first modern diesel, I’m not so sure.
Can Anyone confirm either way to give me some piece of mind?!!
If I took it out for a long drive, how long is needed for it to run its cycle?
