PUFFIN BLACK SMOKE

Have noticed when revin to around 2000 25000 black smoke is this common with passats also checked oil and needed 1ltr to top it up only done 6000 miles since service,was talkin to a guy and he said it may need an EGR valve any idea wot this valve does any info would b great CHEERS Ray 140.
