rear speakers not working

Hi hope someone can help I have bought a 2006 passat and have tried adjusting the speakers so the sound comes from all of them but I am only getting sound from the speakers at the front of the car. Is this because there aren't any speakers in the rear or am I not adjusting it correctly. I have checked the manuel and tried to follow the instructions but still nothing. Thanks in advance.
