guide to changing thermostat?

Hi , after taking the car (2.0 tdi 140) to a garage to have the stat changed and them wasting my time and giving me the car back with the old stat still in! I'm thinking of doing it myself.

I have changed the stat on my 328 before which was relatively easy but how easy is it on one of these? the so called vw specialist seemed to have problems and said it would take a lot longer than they originally thought.

I have tried to find a guide but no luck , can it be done without removing the alternator? or is it easier to remove it for access? a link to a guide would be great
