side lightlight replacement 06 wagon

My drivers side light has an itermittent fault, the bulb " not working" warning light comes on every so often and the bulb doesnt work but then goes off again after a few mins and the bulb works again?
whats the easist way to change the bulb, ive looked at different post via google, 1 says bumper off, headlight out (whats that all about to change a poxxy bulb) another says to use long nose pliers, and the 3rd 1 ive seen on an american site says, take the wheel liner off and go in that way, to be honest thats seems the most logical but then i am driving a VW and they seem to love to make things hard to do
