345mm Front Disc Brake Size?

So I'm about to replace the discs and pads up front on my '55 plate sport wagon, however I've noticed on the likes of GSF & Euro car parts websites that they also list a larger 345mm disc (mine are 312mm).
Does anyone know what models VW fitted the 345's to?
I would have thought that the sport models would have been fitted with the larger discs or was this just a change applied to later model year B6's?
