long brake pedal problems

Hi,
Friend @ work has an 07 plate Passat 2.0 Diesel and noticed while driving the brake pedal as good as goes to the floor.
Fluid level is ok and looks clean.
Pads are ok and havent been changed for a while but lots of meat on them.
Brake pedal pumps up and when engine is sarted begin to sink.
Any ideas ?..........
It there a comman problem on this model ?
