Unable to use driver's door handle

Hi, my problem is the driver’s door handle.
On my car, I operate central locking remotely from my key fob but during the icy weather recently the driver’s door was stuck with ice. I tried pulling the handle hard but without success.
I waited until temperatures were above zero degrees centigrade but the outside door handle did not work although I could open the driver’s door by leaning across from the passenger’s side.
In the past I had removed door trim and door handle on my old B3 Passat and could see the operating mechanism very easily but I have now removed the door trim of my B6 estate and not sure what to do next.
I did read through my Haynes book although it did seem disjointed and mind boggling.
Any help and clarity would be appreciated.
